The study determined the treatment modality and ways of coping among patients with breast cancer in selected hospitals of Cebu City, 2011. The findings served as bases for a proposed action plan. Specially, the study answered questions on the profile of the respondents; the treatment modality mostly advised or opted by the patient and the ways of coping among the respondents. The relationship of the variables was statiscally treated to check their significance.
A theoretical model was evaluated via a descriptive corelational design. A questionnaire was used. Respondents were selected via purposive sampling. The study was conducted in two tertiary hospitals of Cebu City which included Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center and Perpetual Succour Hospital. Data were treated through simple percentage, weighted mean and chi-square test of independence.
There was four significant findings, viz,: (1) most of the respondents were middle-aged adults, married, earning an average, still menstruating; a majority of the respondents had history of breast feeding and only a number were positive for pill intake and family history; (2) surgery supplemented with chemotherapy ranked first among the treatment modality chose by the respondents followed by surgery alone and surgery plus hormonal therapy; (3) respondents were positively coping with the breast cancer; (4) there was a significant relationship between the onset of menarche and the treatment modality opted by the respondent; moreover, there was also a significant relationship between the stage of cancer and the respondents negative ways of coping Surgery plus chemotherapy was the most treatment option chosen by the patients. Ways of coping among the respondents varied but they are all positively coping with the dreaded disease.
