Abstract
-
This study assessed the values-based needs in the continuing professional development of staff nurses in selected district hospitals in Cebu, CY 2017. Findings of the study served as the basis for a proposed action plan.
This research utilized the descriptive-correlational design with the use of a researcher-made instrument. The 100 staff nurses from the selected district hospitals in southern Cebu were used as respondents. They responded to the two-part researcher made questionnaire. The first part presents the profile of the respondents, while the second part obtained the values-based needs such as care clients, ethico-moral and legal practice and personal and professional values. The gathered data were treated using simple percentage, weighted mean, rank, and Chi-square test of independence.
The study revealed indicators that are highly needed which are as follows: treating the patient with dignity and respect and exhibiting an awareness of age, gender, racial, cultural and religious differences; maintains patient confidentiality within legal and regular parameters; and accountable and takes responsibility for own nursing actions and professional conduct. The study further revealed that the age of the respondents had a significant relationship with the values-based needs. A conclusion was drawn that care of clients, ethico-moral and legal practices, and personal/professional values are issues which every nurse must attend to because they are highly needed in his professional development. The researcher strongly recommends that the proposed action plan be implemented.
