Abstract
-
The study focuses on the causes of failure in Differential Calculus as perceived by students of the University of Cebu. It is an investigation and confirmation of the proposition by Schiefele and Csikszentmihalyahi that learning and failures are generally affected by three factors: student characteristics, home environment, and school environment.
As only 4 colleges in the University of Cebu offered Differential Calculus, it was easy for the researcher to ask all 101 students who failed in Differential Calculus in the 1st Semester of School Year 1997-1998 to answer the questionnaire. Student Characteristics was confirmed as the highest cause of failure followed by School Environment, with Home Environment being ranked lowest. Of the thirty factors, being “too shy to ask questions’ was identified as the main culprit that led to the failure of students in Differential Calculus.
A Teaching Guide/Syllabus was then designed by the researcher to offset whatever weaknesses were identified in the course of the research. It took into consideration the factors that were identified as the main causes of failure among students of Differential Calculus and activities and projects were recommended to augment the students’ learning.
