Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of visual aids in teaching Grade 9 English at Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion, Tipolo, Mandaue City, Cebu, School Year 107-2018. The result was used as bases for a proposed action plan.
A quasi-experimental design was used with the control and experimental groups. There were 30 grade nine students as subjects in the study. The students answered a forty-item sentence and paragraph analysis type of test as a research instrument. The experimental group was treated using visual aids while the control group was taught using the lecture method. Pretest and posttest evaluation were used to measure the academic performance of the students in both groups.
The findings of the study revealed that majority of the students got less satisfactory level of performance and the pretest value for both groups were comparable or much closer with each other. The posttest scores of both groups marked an increase on good performances and the posttest mean value of the experimental group is significantly higher compared to the control group. The study concluded that the use of visual aids is a very effective tool to facilitate students’ knowledge in using transitional devices, learning English grammar lessons and improving the performance of the students. It will help the learners engage in thorough analysis, synthesis and deeper comprehension of English concepts.
