Abstract
This study was designed to explore the Volunteer Probation Aides’ experiences on Clients under the Parole and Probation program. The findings serves as the basis for adopting changes and improvement in the recruitment, selection, training and retention of volunteers. Specifically, it determined the following: positive experiences, the negative experiences and the challenges of volunteer probation aides on clients under the parole and probation program.
The study is a qualitative type of inquiry using phenomenological approach. This inquiry utilized fourteen volunteer probation aides in the parole and probation office of the province of Negros Oriental, which Dumaguete is the capital city. The informants were selected randomly based on the criteria set to qualify as informants in this study. The main instrument used for this study was the open ended interview guide prepared by the researcher.
The themes Deepest Expressions of Love of god and Country, Personal Commitment, Enthusiasm and Satisfaction, A Priceless Reward and A Catalyst for Positive Change all highlights the positive experiences of the informants on clients under the parole and probation program. The themes Lack of family Engagement, Lack of Institutional Support and Supervision talks about the negative experiences of the informants on clients. The theme, A Battle at the Crossroads, discusses the challenges of volunteer probation aides on clients under the parole and probation program. Improving recruitment and appointment system for volunteer probation aide in every barangay, institutionalization of the screening procedures to identify suitable volunteers, liability coverage or an insurance protection extended to volunteer probation aide, and the formulation of written job description for volunteers were the implications cited by the researcher based on the findings of the study.
