The subjects were sixty (60) orthopedic patients experiencing any forms of pain in the Orthopedic Ward. Specific objectives wee as follows: described profile in terms of age, gender, number of surgery/surgeries and diagnosis. The study utilized the descriptive-correlational method using a researcher-made questionnaire.
The study revealed that majority were 15-29 years old, belonging to the adolescent and young adult group. As to gender males dominate the orthopedic ward most cases due to motor vehicular accident specifically fracture of the lower extremities. Findings revealed that most patients of the orthopedic ward suffering from pain preferred pharmacologic pain interventions specifically, Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs for pain relief. While non-pharmacologic pain interventions were less utilized.
Based on the findings of the study the researcher recommend that nurses should be more sensitive to the emotional needs of their patients through constant monitoring and assessing the level of pain the patient is having in order to provide adequate pain relief measures. That medical practitioner could be pain interventions to help alleviate pain experienced by the patients and to ensure that the right of freedom from pain is maintained for all patients.
The proposed action plan is implemented and future researcher to conduct studies on the preferred pain interventions of orthopedic patients.
