Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to determine the writing literacy level of the College of Education students in the University of Cebu-Main Campus, School Year 2013-2014. Based on the findings, an enhanced syllabus was proposed as an output. The study sought to answer the following particularities: profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender, and year level; the respondents’ level of literacy in writing blogs; the kind of blog entry the respondents write; the benefits derived in blogging as perceived by the respondents; common language errors that the respondents committed in writing blogs; parallel corrections to the identified errors; and the relationship between the respondents’ profile and level of literacy in writing blogs.
This descriptive research made use of questionnaires to obtain randomly-selected blogs. The blog entries selected were then distributed to selected English teachers of the university and evaluated through a rubric for writing.
Findings show that most of the respondents were 17 to 20 years, mostly females from the second year level. Most of the respondents belonged to the “Not Literate” level of literacy in writing blogs, and the most common kind of blog entries that they wrote were edublogs which reflected their compliance to academic requirements that can only be completed through blogging. The most commonly committed mistake on the blogs collected was sentence fragments which should be taught and practiced more in the class. Furthermore, findings show that there is no relationship between the profile of the respondents and their writing fluency level. In conclusion, blogging is a very effective form of self-expression which students utilize in global communication. English teachers should encourage blogging as an innovate educational activity to emphasize writing literacy skills and develop students’ multiple intelligences. The study is recommended to be utilized in the possible researchers in the possible researcher in the future that are related to the topic, and the proposed enhanced syllabus should be utilized, adapted and implemented to enhance students’ writing skills in the language.
